Mountain bike

Mountain biking: the race formats, from short track to downhill.

Mountain bike racing ranges from a short-track race of about 20 minutes to downhill runs against the clock and enduro's chains of timed stages, with and without motors. This page gives each format as the UCI defines it, with the dates each joined the world championships or World Cup.

Get training

This page explains what governing bodies, standards bodies and road authorities publish. It is not a substitute for cycle training from a qualified instructor, for a qualified bike mechanic, or for medical advice.

The formats

The UCI's mountain bike world championships explainer (2026) is the main source for the definitions below. We did not read the UCI's Part 4, Mountain Bike, so the detailed rules for each format are not given here.

FormatAs the UCI describes itFirst world title or World Cup year (UCI)
Cross-country Olympic (XCO)Laps of a circuit typically 3.5 to 4.5 km long; elite races last about 80 to 100 minutesCross-country was on the first world championships programme, 1990; Olympic since Atlanta 1996
Cross-country short track (XCC)A race of about 20 minutes on a short courseWorld championship from 2021, Val di Sole
Cross-country team relay (XCR)Each rider in the team completes one lapWorld title from 1999, Are, Sweden
Downhill (DHI)An individual race against the clock on a course usually 2 to 5 km long; elite runs take about 3 to 5 minutesWorld championships from 1990
Cross-country marathon (XCM)Has its own separate world championshipsJoined the World Cup from 2023
EnduroSeveral timed special stages, mainly downhill, joined by untimed liaison stagesJoined the World Cup from 2023
E-enduroThe enduro idea on courses with technical climbs suited to enduro e-bikesJoined the World Cup from 2023
E-mountain bike cross-country (E-XC)Cross-country on e-mountain bikesWorld titles from 2019, Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada
Eliminator (XCE)A separate short head-to-head format2026 world championships awarded to Barcelona, Spain

The first UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, at Durango in the USA in 1990, had downhill and cross-country on the programme. The UCI says XCC results help set the start grid for XCO races at World Cup rounds (UCI, 2019). The 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships were scheduled for Val di Sole, Italy, from 26 to 30 August 2026; results are covered in the events section.

How long is an XCC course? The UCI's 2026 world championships explainer says about 1 to 2 km. An older UCI explainer from 2019 says 1 to 1.5 km. Both are the UCI's own descriptions, from different years.

Cycling Canada's older discipline page names four competitive mountain bike styles: cross-country, marathon, downhill and four-cross (4X).

Mountain biking at the Olympic Games

For Los Angeles 2028 the UCI names one mountain bike event, cross-country Olympic (XCO), with a quota of 72 athletes.

The bikes, as the press describes them

We found no governing-body taxonomy of mountain bikes. The magazine Bike Perfect (Ryan Simonovich, updated 23 September 2022) separates hardtails, which have no rear shock and a suspension or rigid fork, from full-suspension bikes with suspension front and rear. It gives typical rear travel as up to about 120 mm for cross-country, about 120 mm for "downcountry", 130 to 150 mm for trail, over 150 mm for enduro and around 200 mm for downhill bikes, and describes cross-country bikes as built for speed and pedalling efficiency, trail bikes as all-rounders, enduro bikes as biased towards descending, downhill bikes as made for the steepest descents and poor at climbing, and dirt jump bikes as mostly hardtails for jumps and skateparks. These are a magazine's descriptions, not rules.

What the UCI equipment rules say about mountain bikes

The UCI's bike specifications in articles 1.3.011 to 1.3.025 apply to road, track and cyclo-cross; mountain bikes have discipline-specific technical rules (article 1.3.011). The rules as reproduced in the Japan Cycling Federation's copy of the UCI clarification guide, whose edition date we could not confirm, note two differences:

  • A bicycle under article 1.3.007 has two wheels of equal diameter, but mountain bikes are an exception and may use wheels of different diameters. Only one chain may be used.
  • Article 1.3.004 says no technical innovation may be used until the UCI has approved it, except in mountain bike racing.

E-mountain bikes in UCI events

The same guide sets limits for electrically power assisted cycles (EPACs) in UCI events: assistance only up to 25 km/h (unless an event's technical guide says otherwise where EN 15194 does not apply), only while the rider pedals forwards, cut off within two metres of stopping pedalling, a drive unit of no more than 3.1 kg, and a battery of no more than 4.5 kg that conforms to UN3480. The guide says these are based on the European standard EN 15194, with the UCI's own rules prevailing where the two conflict. UCI Part 1 (version on 1 July 2026, article 1.1.035) requires riders in EPAC events to be 19 or over. Road-use e-bike law is a separate matter, covered on the e-bike classes and laws page.

Mountain biking in USA Cycling

Wikipedia says the National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA), once an independent mountain bike governing body, became USA Cycling's mountain bike division. USA Cycling's Policy VIII (revised 7 July 2026) treats "Pro" in mountain biking as an ability category, unlike other disciplines where a professional is a member of a UCI-registered team. Its category upgrade policy, effective 1 January 2025, added a mountain bike points matrix based on placing and field size. The licences and categories page explains the categories.

Riding technique on trails is not something this site teaches; that is for a qualified instructor or coach.
