Two disciplines in 1900, many more now
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the sport's world governing body, said in its 125th-anniversary release of April 2025 that it governed two disciplines when it was founded in 1900, road and track. The same release says it governs 11 today and names road, track, mountain bike, BMX Racing, BMX Freestyle, cyclo-cross, trials, indoor cycling, cycling esports, and "gravel and snow bike".
That last item is written as one entry, so a count of the printed list gives ten names against the eleven the UCI states. The release does not say how it reaches eleven. A separate UCI 125th-anniversary article lists gravel (added in 2022) and snow bike (added in 2024) as separate additions, which suggests snow bike is counted on its own, but we have not confirmed how the UCI counts its list. Para-cycling does not appear as a separate item in that list; Cycling Canada describes para-cyclists racing on the road and the track, and the para-cycling page explains the classes.
Other lists draw the lines differently. Wikipedia, for example, gives the main forms of cycle sport as road racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX and cycle speedway. We found no single official taxonomy beyond each governing body's own list.
The disciplines in brief
| Discipline | What it is, according to the governing body or federation | More |
|---|---|---|
| Road | One-day races, stage races and time trials on the road. One of the UCI's two founding disciplines. | Road races |
| Track | Racing on a velodrome. Cycling Canada groups the events into two families, sprint and endurance. | Track cycling |
| Cyclo-cross | Laps over mixed ground such as woods, mud, meadow and short hills, alternating riding with carrying the bike, as Cycling Canada describes it. | Cyclo-cross and gravel |
| Gravel | We found no UCI definition of gravel. The UCI described the course of its first gravel world championships, in October 2022, as roughly three-quarters gravel and cobbled sections. | Cyclo-cross and gravel |
| Mountain bike | Off-road formats from cross-country laps to downhill runs against the clock, plus enduro, marathon and e-mountain bike events. | Mountain biking |
| BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle | Up to eight riders racing on a short track of jumps and banked corners; Freestyle Park is a judged discipline of timed runs. | BMX, trials and indoor |
| Trials | Riding over obstacles without touching the ground or the obstacle with anything except the tyres, under the UCI's definition. | BMX, trials and indoor |
| Indoor cycling | Artistic cycling and cycle-ball. The 2025 UCI world championships in Goppingen, Germany, awarded seven titles across the two. | BMX, trials and indoor |
| Cycling esports and snow bike | Named by the UCI as disciplines it governs. Our research did not confirm their formats from UCI sources, so we do not describe them here. |
Cycling Canada's discipline page says road racing began in Paris in 1868. Claims to a "first" race are disputed. The UCI calls a race at the Parc de Saint-Cloud, Paris, on 31 May 1868 the first officially recorded race; Grace's Guide says there is no verifiable contemporary evidence that it was the first, and records historians who place it second or third that day. The first races page gives each version.
Cycling at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games
The UCI says cycling at Los Angeles 2028 will award 22 titles across five disciplines: road, track, mountain bike, BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle. Its release follows the IOC's programme announcement of 9 April; the page does not print the year, and we take it to be 2025 from context without having confirmed it. The UCI names these events:
- Road: road race and time trial.
- Track: team sprint, sprint, keirin, team pursuit, omnium and Madison.
- Mountain bike: cross-country Olympic (XCO).
- BMX Freestyle: Park. BMX Racing completes the five disciplines.
The UCI gives the athlete quotas as 180 for road, 190 for track, 72 for mountain bike, 48 for BMX Racing and 24 for BMX Freestyle: 514 in all, divided equally between 257 women and 257 men, as at Paris 2024.
Cycling at the LA28 Paralympic Games
US Paralympics Cycling reported on 13 June 2025 that Paralympic cycling at LA28 will have 51 medal events on road and track, 28 for men, 21 for women and 2 mixed, with a quota of 220 athletes. It named the track venue as the VELO Sports Center velodrome in Carson, California, a 250 m track, and said the road course had not yet been chosen at that date.
What this site covers, and what it does not
These Learn pages describe how the sport is organised: who writes the rules, how races are run and scored, how licences and age categories work, what the law says about e-bikes and riding on the road, and how people learn. Each rule is given as a named body's rule with its edition. They do not teach riding, racing tactics, bike handling or repairs. Those are for a qualified cycle instructor or coach to teach in person, and mechanical work belongs with a qualified bike mechanic.
The equipment rules that shape racing bikes are on the UCI equipment rules page, and the vocabulary is in the glossary.
